There's a Star-Sized Diamond in Space Named After a Beatles Song

When a star like our Sun dies, it doesn’t explode. It sheds its outer layers and leaves behind its exposed core — a dense, Earth-sized ember called a white dwarf, slowly cooling over billions of years.
And as certain white dwarfs cool, something beautiful happens. Their carbon-and-oxygen interiors begin to crystallize, the atoms locking into a rigid lattice. A white dwarf that has crystallized is, structurally, a colossal diamond — the same carbon crystal as the stone in a ring, just scaled up to the size of a planet and weighing as much as a star.
In 2004, astronomers studying a white dwarf called BPM 37093, about 50 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, concluded its core had largely crystallized. The press did the math on its carbon content and reported it as a diamond of roughly 10 billion trillion trillion carats. The team nicknamed the star Lucy, after the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
A few honest clarifications, because the story often gets oversold:
- It’s not a flawless gemstone you could set in jewelry — it’s crystallized carbon under crushing pressure, more like an unimaginably dense diamond-like solid
- You could never mine it; its surface gravity would flatten anything, and it glows at thousands of degrees
- But the underlying physics is real: cool a carbon white dwarf enough and it does solidify into a diamond structure
And here’s the part that brings it home. Our own Sun will end this way. In about 5 billion years it will become a white dwarf, and over the tens of billions of years after that, it will slowly crystallize.
The Sun’s final act is to become a diamond, floating dark and silent, long after Earth is gone. Every star like it shares the same fate. The galaxy is quietly filling with them.
