The Sun Is 99.86% of the Entire Solar System — Everything Else Is Rounding Error

We draw the solar system as the Sun surrounded by a family of planets — important, substantial worlds arranged around a central star. The picture is wildly misleading about one thing: mass.

The Sun makes up 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system. Everything else — all eight planets, every moon, every asteroid, every comet, all the dust — shares the leftover 0.14%.

To put that in perspective:

  • Jupiter alone accounts for about two-thirds of everything that isn’t the Sun. It’s more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined.
  • Earth is a rounding error on a rounding error — about three-millionths of the solar system’s mass.
  • You could think of the solar system, mass-wise, as “the Sun, plus Jupiter, plus some crumbs.”

The Sun’s dominance is why everything orbits it, of course — but the scale is hard to feel. Over 1.3 million Earths would fit inside the Sun’s volume. It burns through 4 million tonnes of its own mass every second, converting it to energy via nuclear fusion — and it’s so vast that it has done this for 4.6 billion years and used up only a fraction of its fuel.

Here’s a subtle twist, though: the Sun doesn’t sit perfectly still at the center. Because Jupiter is so massive, the two of them actually orbit a shared balance point — and that point sometimes lies just outside the Sun’s surface. Technically, the Sun wobbles. This tiny wobble, detected in other stars, is one of the main ways we discover exoplanets.

The most humbling framing: the Sun is a completely average star. Utterly typical. And it so thoroughly dominates our entire world that everything we’ve ever known or touched is a speck orbiting in the 0.14% left over.
