A $85 Million Helicopter Flew on Mars — Using a Processor From a 2014 Smartphone

Flying a helicopter on Mars sounds impossible for one simple reason: there’s barely any air. The Martian atmosphere is about 1% as dense as Earth’s — trying to fly there is like trying to fly at three times the altitude of Mount Everest. No aircraft had ever flown on another planet.
NASA decided to try anyway. Tucked under the belly of the Perseverance rover, a 1.8-kilogram helicopter named Ingenuity rode to Mars — a $85 million “technology demonstration” that most people expected to manage a few hops before breaking.
To beat the thin air, its twin carbon-fiber rotors spun at up to 2,500 RPM — five times faster than an Earth helicopter. Because Mars is 5–20 light-minutes away, no human could joystick it; every flight was executed entirely by the helicopter itself. Its brain? A Snapdragon 801 — the processor from a 2014-era smartphone, vastly more computing power than any NASA spacecraft before it, running open-source Linux flight software.
On April 19, 2021, Ingenuity spun up, lifted three meters into the butterscotch sky, hovered, and landed. The team compared it to the Wright brothers’ moment at Kitty Hawk — and indeed, Ingenuity carried a postage-stamp-sized piece of fabric from the original 1903 Wright Flyer taped under its solar panel.
The mission plan was 5 flights in 30 days. Ingenuity flew:
- 72 flights over nearly three years
- More than 17 kilometers of total distance, hitting 36 km/h
- Through dust storms and a brutal Martian winter it was never designed to survive
It scouted terrain for Perseverance, becoming an actual working teammate. In January 2024, a hard landing snapped a rotor tip, and the little aircraft was retired — permanently parked on the plains of Jezero Crater.
Its descendants are already being designed. The next skies to be conquered may be Titan’s.
