Why has it lasted centuries when Earth’s hurricanes die in weeks? Earth’s storms are ground down by friction with land and sea. Jupiter has no surface — nothing to drag against — and the Spot sits wedged between two powerful jet streams that keep spinning it like a ball bearing.
Whether it’s truly dying is a live scientific debate: some models suggest only the visible cloud layer is shrinking while the deep vortex — which the Juno spacecraft found extends hundreds of kilometers down — remains healthy.
